Lucca is one of the most famous art cities of Italy, famous for its historical monuments such as the walls (Mura di Lucca), the Guinigi Tower, the clock tower, the Duomo of San Martino, the Teatro del Giglio, Piazza dell'anfiteatro, Piazza Napoleone and the Foro, Piazza San Michele.
Lucca kept its autonomy as an independent State for many centuries, until the unification of Italy. Closely connected to tourism, the town lives thanks to the industry and to the lively and medium-sized companies (very important are the paper factories).
Some of the most relevant events are Lucca Comics and Games (each year between late October and early November), considered the most important international festival dedicated to the world of comics, animation, illustration and games (2nd place in Europe and 3rd in the world) and the Summer Music Festival (every July), which takes place in Piazza Napoleone.
